Mini Bernedoodles vs Mini Goldendoodles vs Cavapoos – Which One is Right for Your Family?
Choosing the perfect puppy is an exciting (and sometimes overwhelming!) decision. At Royal Doodles of Florida, we specialize in ethically raised Mini Bernedoodles and Mini Goldendoodles, but we often get asked how they compare to Cavapoos. All three are wonderful, affectionate, low-shedding companions — but they have important differences in size, energy, grooming, and personality.
Here’s a clear, honest breakdown to help you find the best furry friend for your lifestyle.
Size & Appearance
• Mini Bernedoodle: Typically 25–50 lbs, 18–24 inches tall. Sturdy build with beautiful tri-color coats (black, white, rust) or other striking patterns. They have a more “substantial” feel.
• Mini Goldendoodle: Usually 15–35 lbs, 13–20 inches tall. Classic teddy-bear look in gorgeous shades of gold, apricot, cream, or red. Often a bit more compact and fluffy.
• Cavapoo: Smallest of the three — generally 10–25 lbs (sometimes as small as 8–15 lbs), 9–14 inches tall. They have a dainty, lap-dog build with silky or wavy coats in many colors.
Best for: Families who want a bigger cuddle buddy → Mini Bernedoodle or Goldendoodle. Apartment dwellers or those who prefer a tiny travel companion → Cavapoo.
Temperament & Personality
All three breeds are known for being loving and great with kids and families, but their personalities differ slightly:
• Mini Bernedoodles: Loyal, gentle, and often a bit more “Velcro” (they love following you everywhere). They tend to be calmer and protective without being aggressive — wonderful family guardians.
• Mini Goldendoodles: Outgoing, playful, and social butterflies. They inherit that happy-go-lucky Golden Retriever energy and love making friends with everyone.
• Cavapoos: Extremely affectionate, gentle, and intuitive. Many owners describe them as “velcro dogs” who are especially in tune with emotions — perfect snugglers for couch time.
All are intelligent and eager to please, making them highly trainable with positive reinforcement.
Energy Level & Exercise Needs
• Mini Bernedoodles: Medium energy. They enjoy daily walks, playtime, and family activities but are happy to relax indoors.
• Mini Goldendoodles: Slightly higher energy. They love fetch, short hikes, and interactive play — great for active families.
• Cavapoos: Lower energy. Short walks and indoor play are usually enough. They’re ideal for seniors, busy professionals, or anyone who wants a more laid-back companion.
Grooming Requirements
All three have low-shedding, hypoallergenic-leaning coats thanks to their Poodle parent, but maintenance varies:
• Regular brushing (3–4 times a week) is essential for all to prevent matting.
• Professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is recommended.
• Mini Bernedoodles can have plusher coats that need extra attention around the face and sanitary areas.
• Mini Goldendoodles often have a soft, wavy “teddy bear” coat.
• Cavapoos may need frequent ear cleaning due to their floppy ears (inherited from the Cavalier).
Health & Lifespan
Responsible breeding makes a huge difference. At Royal Doodles, we health-test our parent dogs extensively (OFA, genetic panels, etc.).
• All three breeds can live 10–15+ years with good care.
• Larger dogs (Mini Bernedoodles) may be more prone to joint concerns.
• Cavapoos can inherit heart issues from the Cavalier side — this is why choosing an ethical breeder who tests is critical.
• Mini Goldendoodles often have a strong reputation for overall health when properly bred.
